5 Active Adventures in Mallorca

Mallorca is an island full of surprises and is so much more than its spectacular white sand beaches! With the dramatic crags of the Tramuntana mountain range along the north coast, unforgettable rocky coves dotted across the island and wildlife rich clear turquoise waters, there are many opportunities for an active adventure. Below you will find our 5 favourite activities that you simply cannot miss during your trip to this Mediterranean paradise.

Active Adventures in Mallorca Cove

#1 Scuba Diving and Snorkelling

One of the best ways to explore Mallorca’s incredible coasts is through scuba diving or snorkelling in its stunning blue waters. There are many options to do this across the island, whether you are a complete beginner or have more experience. Explore hidden caves and crevasses that are only accessible from the water, discover picturesque coves and have the chance to see Mallorca’s wildlife up close! The north of the island offers some of the best spots for all levels, but there are also great spots on the east coast and the Illa de Cabrera in the south. If you are an experienced diver you can go on some unique wreck dives, cavern dives or deep dives across the island.

#2 Cycling

Mallorca is a growing favourite for cyclists and for good reason. The island has winding mountain roads, fantastic scenery and increasingly good cycling infrastructure. Over half of Mallorca’s roads have been made cyclist friendly with signage and separate cycle lanes and there are plenty of bike and equipment rental businesses across the island. Cycling royalty, such as British cyclist Bradley Wiggins who famously trained for the Tour de France on the island’s challenging Tramuntana mountain roads, are making Mallorca cycling holidays increasingly popular. If you really want to test your leg-power, then a make your way to Sa Calobra. This 12km of serpentine ascent will challenge even the most experienced of cyclists!

#3 Stand Up Paddle

If you are looking for a unique experience and want to discover some of Mallorca’s magical coastal spots, then stand up paddling (SUP) is a great choice. It is great fun for all the family and doesn’t require prior experience – you just need to find your balance! There are plenty of beautiful sights along the coast that are only accessible by sea, giving you a chance to discover water caves, rock bridges, reefs and hidden coves. You can hire all the equipment and head out alone or take a guided tour. Tours give you the chance to learn more about the island’s history and nature from a local expert. Some of the best areas to explore are along the north coast, especially along the majestic Formentor Peninsula.

#4 Hiking

Mallorca has long been a popular hiking destination with some of the best hiking in Europe to be found on the island’s many dramatic peaks. The Tramuntana mountain range and the Formentor and Pinar peninsulas offer some unforgettable routes with fabulous routes across the island and out to sea. Many of these routes have been in use for centuries by herders and pilgrims and the mountains are dotted with refuges, monasteries and hermitages where you can spend the night on multiday hikes. The trails are usually well maintained with clear signage, but it is always recommended to take a map and some sturdy walking boots. Hikes in Mallorca are never disappointing as there is always an unforgettable view to look forward to!

#5 Canyoning

Possibly the most exhilarating of all the activities on the list, canyoning in Mallorca gives you the chance to step outside your comfort zone while appreciating the beauty of the island. Canyoning can involve jumping off boulders, abseiling or sliding down waterfalls and working your way down gullies and valleys. Mallorca has some great spots for canyoning with its rocky limestone mountains providing the perfect environment for all levels from beginners to experts. You will need to go with a guide and there are plenty of great options available. The activity can be exhausting and a bit scary, but it is well worth it for the exhilaration! There are several suitable areas across the island, but the Na Mora and the Sa Fosca are two of the best.
