When you think of the world’s best surf destination, chances are you think of Australia, Hawaii or Cornwall. But did you know that Portugal offers some of the best surf spots not just in Europe, but the world? This small country faces the brunt of the Atlantic, creating some of the biggest and most exciting waves to surf anywhere on the globe. Despite these world-famous waves, Portugal offers fantastic surfing for all ability levels, so don’t worry if you are a complete beginner! Below we have chosen some of our favourite spots, where you are certain to have an unforgettable time.
The area around Ericeira is prime surf territory and is a World Surf Reserve with 9 different beaches, all offering great waves. This includes Coxos, Foz do Lizandro and Pedra Branca with Coxos being one of the best spots in the country. Waves there move quickly and are right hand waves best surfed at low tide for the perfect conditions! When you have exhausted the surfing, make sure to check out the quaint traditional fishing village of Ericeira. It has cobbled streets and some lovely places to eat and drink – don’t miss out on the local pastries!
Make the most of your surf time in Ericeira with a stay at Rapture Surf Camp. They are located right on the beach at Foz do Lizandro in a traditional Portuguese villa and are just a 30-minute walk from Ericeira. You can get tailored surf tuition from local experts and get the best advice on surfing in this ideal surf destination. Alongside surfing you can get involved in some yoga sessions, table tennis, relax on the roof terrace and enjoy some delicious home cooked food!
If you want to see some truly breath-taking surfing, then head on over to Nazaré where in 2011 Garrett McNamara successfully surfed one of the biggest waves in surf history. Huge waves are not a rare sight on Portugal’s Atlantic coast, but the size of the waves at Nazaré make the others look small. It is a great location to watch the pros at their best and pick up some tips for your own practice. Nearby beaches offer less challenging surfing suitable for all ability levels and it is the perfect area to try the amazing freshly caught sardines, best served grilled.
Just 20 minutes away from Lisbon you will find the stunning beaches of Carcavelos. This is a popular destination due to its convenient location, beachside entertainment and of course excellent waves! During the summer there are plenty of options for all abilities, while the winter months see some more challenging breaks and fantastic barrel waves. You will find all the facilities you need at Carcavelos with toilets, showers, volleyball and basketball courts, but be prepared for the crowds, especially during the peak summer months.
If you want to explore some nature, while you take a break from surfing, then head to Arrifana. This small fishing village is surrounded by the gorgeous Costa Vicentina National Park and is a great spot for a digital detox! The beach itself is flanked by dramatic cliffs and greenery and is a wonderful spot to be whether surfing or watching the pros. The waves at Arrifana are ideal for both surfers and bodyboarders and its seclusion in the national park means you are unlikely to need to jostle for space. It also offers the ideal conditions for both beginners and intermediate abilities. There is plenty of parking and despite its location, the beach is easy to access.
Sagres is one of the best places to surf in the Algarve in the south of Portugal and it offers plenty of other facilities and activities too! You will find the best surfing outside of the summer months and again there are some great options both for beginners and the more advanced. It is also easy to find high quality surf tuition in Sagres, all year round. If you want a break from surfing, you can go whale and dolphin watching, go on a jeep safari or try your hand at another type of water sport. With so much to do in Sagres you will always find something for all the family!
